Reflections from My Rock That Swing Class

Strength training for swing dancers isn’t about looking athletic, it’s about preventing overuse injuries and building a baseline that lets you dance pain-free for decades.

Overview

I had the pleasure of giving a trial class at Rock That Swing this weekend. It took me a couple of years to convince Marcus to let me do it, but it was worth the wait.

I had one hour.

One hour to explain why overuse injuries happen, and to run through a small “workout” that I hope can evolve into a simple warm-up routine for the community in the future. As always, I ran out of time. There is so much to say. One hour is not much when you’re trying to give people something useful, practical, and sustainable.

The feedback was great! I’m grateful for that.
But most of my reflections came after the class.

I attended both parties at the Deutsches Theatre. This time I had a privileged pass, which allowed me to mingle with some of the teachers and talk to quite a few dancers on the floor. I had some incredible conversations.

And something became clearer.

These teachers are phenomenal performers. Some of the presentations were off the charts.

But several of them were pushing through injuries. Passion carrying them further than their bodies were ready to go. And the same story came up in conversation with a few social dancers as well, pain that’s “manageable’’.

That’s when it clicked again.

I don’t just want to give classes.
I want to send a clearer signal to the dancing community about taking care of their bodies. So they can keep dancing at 60, 70, even 90, with more passion than pain.

We talk a lot about style, rhythm, musicality, connection.

But where is the baseline?
Where is the robustness?
Where is the physical preparation that lets you enjoy your art long term?

My goal isn’t to turn dancers into gym athletes.

It’s to help them build a foundation strong enough to support their love for movement, so the dance floor feels like flow, not survival.

So I’ll leave you with this:

Are you flowing across the dance floor?
Or are you dragging and pushing just to get through the steps?

Because there’s a big difference between dancing hard, and dancing for life.
