Overview
Last week, I had a really fun and interesting one. I was on holidays, back in a place I used to live, visiting friends and old acquaintances. I had almost zero time to myself — always on the run: a coffee here, a lunch there, a really good ice cream around the corner. Catching up on all the new things people had lived while I was away — new jobs, great holidays, kids. It was incredible how a bit of time makes so many things happen.
I also stopped by my old workplace and saw a few of my former athletes. It was amazing to see how much progress they’ve made, to see them still pushing to improve and staying active. I had a blast joining some sessions, helping here and there.
But the best part came in the last week. One of the best athletes I’ve ever worked with decided to come visit for a week, and together with two more athletes we set up a small training camp.
What an intense and lovely week, full of memories.
We had great sessions where they tried new things. Sessions where they improved basics and skills they’re working toward. Sessions where we pushed limits, fought frustration, and learned to stay with it. And quite a few laughs along the way.
I’ve always chased improvement to the max — borderline perfection, sometimes even obsession. And this week reminded me of a fundamental lesson I wish I’d learned earlier:
How is your journey?
Are you living for results — or enjoying the process?
One of my athletes was struggling with frustration on a skill and kept asking me if we’d had “good sessions.” And honestly, I felt a bit ashamed. Somewhere along the way, I might’ve planted the idea that results are the only thing that matter — instead of enjoying the day-to-day time we spend in the gym.
Imagine this instead: following a plan toward future goals, while still squeezing the best out of every single session. Enjoying the company of teammates. Knowing you’re doing the small things that will add up over time — without letting a bad day, or a rough session, derail everything just because you want it now.
You might be going through a struggle yourself — in training, at work, or in life. So I’ll leave you with this:
Are you reaching out?
Do you have the team, the partners, the people who make the chase worthwhile — even when it’s hard?
Progress lasts longer when the journey is shared.
