9 Years. 9 Countries. And I Am More Disappointed Than Ever.

After 23 years in gymnastics, 9 countries and every role possible, I am done waiting for the sport to change. So I wrote a system myself.

Overview

I have been searching for my ikigai for years. In 2017 I decided that becoming a full time gymnastics coach was it.

After 9 years in the role, 23 since I started in this sport, and 9 countries later, I am more disappointed in gymnastics than I have ever been.

I have been in every possible position. Assistant coach, head coach, consultant, technical advisor, federation coach. And I feel the same box every time. I know gymnastics is a traditional sport and things move slowly, but in certain places they move too slowly. We are not working with the same kids as before. They are utterly different, and the sport has not caught up.

I have been relentless in the pursuit of learning a better way to coach. And I know this shift is happening in certain places. I was just unlucky in finding mine, and in most places I worked I never had enough time to make a real change. The most progressive environment I managed to work in was the UK, and you can see that reflected in the results they have produced over the last decade and a half.

This last month I had to leave a job. In terms of communication it was the worst environment I have been in so far. But it gave me a push. More than a little one.

It pushed me to finally write my system. A coaching system I have built, tested and refined across all these countries, one that has achieved real results even in places where I could not speak the children's language.

And after reading posts from decorated Olympians saying they do not want their own kids doing their sport, I think the moment is here. I want to start reaching people. Showing a different way. A new method.

So where are you standing?

Are you happy with the way things are? Are you also in a relentless pursuit of something better? Or are you a young coach stuck between the old and the new, not sure which way to move?

I spent the last year writing it down.

The My Architect Framework is everything I have learned across twenty years and nine countries about what actually worked. For building athletes who love what they do and keep developing long after you leave.

V3.1 is free. The thinking behind it is the same thinking that produced results even in gyms where I could not speak the language.
